A Quantitative Social Science Lab

I run a small, hands-on research lab focused on a number of social science projects: from the political economy of taxation, to public administration and how institutions shape policy outcomes, to AI tool development and evaluation. We build datasets, analyze causal relationships, and translate findings into clear, public-facing evidence.

Current Projects

Political Economy of Tax Enforcement
We are assembling a global database of tax policies and enforcement practices, paired with case studies of specific reforms. Lab work spans source collection, data cleaning and documentation, visualization, and quantitative analysis.

Cigarette Tax Evasion in California (with CDTFA)
In partnership with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration, we study illicit trade and compliance dynamics in tobacco markets, integrating administrative and survey data to inform measurement and policy.

Taxation After Conflict (BiH & Cross-Country, with Monika Nalepa)
We examine how transitional justice and post-conflict institutions affect tax morale and compliance, combining country case work (including Bosnia and Herzegovina) with cross-national surveys and event-study designs.

Patriarchy & Public Policy (Italy, with Chiara Superti & Beatrice Montano)
We investigate how gendered social structures shape policy preferences and outcomes. Lab contributions include survey design, coding qualitative sources, and applied statistical modeling.

GenAI & Research Critical Thinking

Can GenAI interpret and critically evaluate scientific evidence? We test how well current LLM technology can evaluate empirical evidence, summarizing key insights and producing quantifiable changes in Bayesian beliefs across theoretical hypotheses.

How We Work (Summer 2025)

Weekly Lab Meeting

Short updates from each team, quick demos, shared troubleshooting.

Weekly 1-on-1 with PI

Focused guidance on tasks, timelines, and research development.
Open, Documented Workflows — reproducible pipelines (clear code, version control, labeled data, literate documentation).
